The Humane Society of the United States estimates that over four-million dogs and cats are euthanized (killed) each year because of overpopulation. A terrible statistic by anyone's standards.

We in the Parkland are not immune to the problem. Every city pound knows what it's like to wait for an animal to be adopted, only to finally have no choice but to put the pet down.

Rural residents know all too well the feeling of seeing another "stray" in the front yard.

The Farmington Pet Adoption Center—a no-kill shelter—can be so overwhelmed with pets that the shelter must turn away new arrivals.

Additionally, the shelter can spend years housing and caring for a pet, all because many people want a "cute" kitten or puppy instead of an adult animal. All the while, the staff try to keep the doors open with the help of volunteers and donations.

ParklandNews.com is going to tackle this problem head-on.

Over the coming weeks we will list available pets from the local pounds as well as local shelters. Information will be updated frequently, including pictures and information on each pet.

For now, please check out a few of the adoptable pets from the Desloge City Pound and the Farmington Pet Adoption Center.
